The Dokotoro Project is being run by a dedicated group of volunteers. Several of us live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and most of us served as Peace Corps Volunteers in Mali.
The gritty details: We have formed a General Partnership to carry out this project. Because it’s a one-time project, we did not feel the need to create a new nonprofit organization. It was, however, important to us that all donations be tax-deductible.
We are being fiscally sponsored by the nonprofit African Sky, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. They have graciously agreed to handle all donations and grants, and pass them on to us in order to carry out the work of translating and publishing the book. That means that 100% of donations to the project will go to direct costs like paying our translators or for printing.
Here’s the nitty gritty. Our core group of volunteers is organized as a General Partnership. Here is a copy of our General Partnership Agreement.
We have registered with the IRS. Our Employer Identification Number is: 46-0618625.
Finally, here is copy of our Fiscal Sponsorship Grant Agreement with African Sky.
The bottom line is that donations to the Dokotoro Project are tax deductible (check with your tax preparer!). Checks should be made out to African Sky, with “Dokotoro Project” on the memo line.
